Once home to the Cheraw, Catawba, Waccamaw and Santee Indian tribes, the area we call Winston-Salem was settled by German-speaking Protestants, known as Moravians, in the mid-1700’s. The Moravian village of Salem (Est. 1772), and its neighboring community, Winston (Est. 1849), merged in 1913 to form the hyphenated “Twin City” we know today.

Today Winston-Salem is a vibrant city of 250,000, forming one part of the Piedmont Triad along with the cities of High Point and Greensboro. It’s the county seat of Forsyth county and the birthplace and headquarters of such internationally known companies as Reynolds American, Krispy Kreme and Hanesbrands.
