Cleaning Tips
Cleanliness is next to dogliness!

We love our pets and enjoy their company, but having them in our homes definitely presents some cleaning challenges! Ever-present pet hair, smelly pet beds and litter box clean-up are just a few of the things that test a tidy pet lover’s patience. We at Laughing Dog Walks n’ Sits can’t solve the bigger mysteries like how dog hair gets on top of the fridge, but we can share some of the cleaning tips we’ve collected over the years.

  • Before washing pet beds, rugs, dog towels or anything else covered in pet hair, first run them through your dryer’s fluff cycle to remove as much of the hair as possible. For items with a lot of hair, you may want to clean the lint trap partway through the cycle.
  • Keep your trash cans lined with an extra bag to protect against leaks and odors from wet food cans or litter box waste. Change the liner bag only as needed.
  • Use flat, crib-size mattress pads to protect furniture and floors from dampness and odors. These pads, available for just a few dollars at big box stores, are waterproof and very absorbent. Use them in pet crates while potty-training your dog.
  • Crib mattresses make great, easy-to-maintain beds for large dogs! Most are waterproof and wipe-down easily. Use crib sheets to cover the mattress and toss them into the wash as needed. If you want a base for your dog’s bed, there are inexpensive toddler bed frames that fit crib mattresses.
  • By far, the most important way to reduce pet hair and odor in your home is to keep your pet’s skin and fur in top condition. Regular brushing is key. Feed premium quality foods and treat skin allergies with supplements or medications as directed by your vet. Use flea and tick medication if these pests are a problem in your area.
